Funds deny women in purdah access to education

Hundreds of women in purdah, who indicated interest to acquires education at the Iwo Community Study Centre in Osun State, may have their hopes dashed, following their inability to pay mandatory fees.

The acting director of the centre, Mrs. Stella Asebiomo, told NOUN News that all efforts to encourage them have not been fruitful, explaining that only two of the women, have so far registered for the current semester.

Some of the women, who spoke through a third party to NOUN News, attributed this to the harsh economic situation in the country.

While soliciting for assistance through a scholarship scheme, the women called on the government of the state of Osun, to come to their aid.

It would be recalled that Iwo Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria, had organized a sensitization programme for women in purdah early this year, as part of its mandate to bring education to the doorstep of the people, irrespective of their circumstances.
Iwo is a predominantly Muslim community and women in purdah constitute 41% of the entire population of the town.
