GDP: Industrialist beckons govt to legislate on home-made goods

Anambra state born industrialist, Mr Godwin Ezeemo, has urged the state and federal governments to legislate on locally-made goods as well place ban on importation of goods that can be manufactured in the country with a view to boost the nation’s economy.

Ezeemo, in an interview with some select journalists on Thursday, observed that patronising home-made products would strengthen indigenous firms, tackle issues of unemployment, while boosting the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to him, “Local firms operate on a tight pace in terms of sources of raw materials, cost of production, maintenance, finance, among others. These are areas of focus where government can support the locals so as to thrive.

“Government can come up with legislation on home-made items which must not be imported so as to encourage the people to buy and proudly use the products made by the local firms. Government should encourage the people to buy local items by banning some of the imported items which are being produced in the country,” he said.

He said local firms had the capacity to manufacture quality goods to serve Nigerians far better than foreign ones if patronised by the government, backed by law of the land, including provision of basic amenities like road network and power supply.
