Genital Mutilation not beneficial, causes distortion – Osuigwe

The Mcginnity Foundation and Pollination Project,Devatop centre for Africa Development yesterday condemned female genital mutilation saying that it was not beneficial and causes distortion.

The  Executive Director of the organization, Mr Joseph Osuigwe gave this warning at the second edition of the Red Card2FGM sports competition in Abuja.

According to him, the programme was organised to increase the  awareness on dangers of  Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and to stimulate young people to act collectively towards abandoning the practice.

He said ” female genital mutilation is a form of violence against women and girls that has no health benefit and causes distortion to womanhood, there is a need to build the nation where women and girls will not be mutilated or harmed and to create a sustainable and creative approach to tackling this practice in Nigeria”.

He explain further that ” the Redcard2FGM campaign is aimed at using the power of sport to raise awareness on the need to abandon female genital mutilation, and to encourage young people, traditional/community leaders,women leaders, councillors and girls to stand against the practice”.

He therefore appeal to volunteers to participate and support  the fight to end FGM in Nigeria.

Over 1,000 (one thousand)students drawn  from 10 (ten)schools in Abuja participated in drama and various sports activities .
