Girl, 10, killed as police rescue kidnapped lawmaker

A 10-year-old girl was weekend killed in Bauchi as police in the state engaged suspected kidnappers of a member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly at Rimin Zayan, Toro Local Government.

Blueprint gathered that though the kidnap victim, Malam Yusuf Nuhu, representing Jema constituency was eventually rescued, the 10-year old Hauwa’u Awalu, who was hit by a stray bullet during the encounter, died later in the hospital where she was taken for medical attention.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Malam Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident while speaking to journalists in Bauchi, said that the command received a tip from concerned citizens who noticed some suspicious looking people in Golf 3 vehicle coming toward Toro from Kaduna.

According to him, “Immediately we dispatched our men who manned a road block at Rimin Zayan. On spotting our men, the suspects opened fire and we engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

“After some minutes of exchange of fire, the suspects abandoned the vehicle with registration number MKR 553 AA and escaped into the bush with bullet wounds. On approaching the vehicle, we found the kidnapped law maker in the car and recovered five expended ammunition of 7. 62 mm,’’ he said.

He said that the lawmaker, who was abducted on March 3, 2014, from his house in Zalau village, was in stable condition and urged members of the public to report anyone with bullet wounds to the nearest police station.
