Global organic food, drinks exported worth $97bn -NEPC

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has disclosed that global organic food and drinks export is worth about 97billion dollars .

The Executive Director /CEO of NEPC, Mr Olusegun Awolowo said with the global increase in demand for organic food , the NEPC hopes to generate $200 million revenue within 10 years from the development of organic farming of seven priority commodities for export .

The Executive Director noted this while he was represented by the Director, Trade Information, Jamie E. Memuduaghan at the National Programme on Organic Farming for Export, signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) between NEPC, Tak Integrated Agriculture solutions limited and Nicery limited on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, the organic farming development programme for export is a critical market intervention and value chain linkage programme under the Zero Oil Plan( ZOP).

Jamie further explained that the project which is a collaborative effort between the NEPC, local farmers and Tak Integrated Agriculture Solutions, it’s International partners and Nicert limited as off-takers / exporters is targeted at 10,000 farmers in each geopolitical zone with an estimated 100,000 hectares land over a period of Three years.

He said the project is also aimed at equipping farmers with the requisite skills acquired for organic farming through capacity building under the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Initiative.

“The ultimate goal of the project is to contribute to the Federal Government policy of developing the potentials of the non-oil sector of the economy through improving production and post-harvest handling of the seven priority organic products for export, with the view to expanding and increasing Nigeria’s share in the global market ,” he said.
