Gombe generates N500m monthly – GIRS

The Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS) has said it generates N500 million monthly as internally generated revenue for the state.

Chairman of the agency, Alhaji Mohammed Damji, who disclosed this to Blueprint in Gombe, said the agency was gradually implementing a reform that will improve the revenue generation of the state.

Damji explained that, notwithstanding that the state is small in size, its economy has started improving.

“On average, we are generating every month N300- N500 million, which is a step forward and this collection is in cash and it goes to government account,” he said.

The GIRS chairman, who described the informal sector as the most important sector of the economy, said on assumption of office, he made sure that all members of the sector were placed on the tax net.

“When we resumed office, virtually all members of the informal sector were not in the tax net but we did an enumeration in the sector and we are able to get about 25,000 tax payers into the net and they are paying their revenue gradually,” he said.

Damji revealed that the agency had engaged the state branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress to assist in bringing all members of the informal sector into the net, saying “we are going to start meetings with all the 70 trade associations in the state to know those of their members that are not paying tax and we ask them to pay N3, 600 annually.”
