Gombe recovers N38m from 668 ghost workers

Gombe state government has stopped the salaries of 668 suspected ghost workers and recovered over N38 million, the Commissioner of Finance, Economic Development, Muhammad Magaji has said.

He stated this while addressing newsmen recently in Gombe.

He said the state and 11 local governments have 67,000 work force with 84 Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) in the state.

Alhaji Magaji said all the staff of the MDAs had been enrolled on the biometric machines with their biometric information fully, adding that academic and employment records have been created for each staff.

He said during the exercise, 431 staff of the state government did not show up for the biometric exercise.

“The 431 staff now has been taken off from the state payroll and over 31,179,446 million naira recovered as savings due to the suspension of the number of people from the payroll.

The commissioner said that in Gombe and Akko local government areas, 237 staff did not show up during the exercise. Gombe local government has 103 while Akko local government has 134.

“The 237 members of staff were suspended from the payroll and over N3.1 million was recovered from Gombe local government area. Over N3.9 million was also recovered from the 134 suspected ghost workers.

“Definitely, the government cannot continue to pay people that do not deserve to be paid,” he said.
