Gombe: SUBEB trains 100 undergraduates on out-of-school advocacy campaign

Gombe state Primary Education Board in collaboration with High Level Women Advocacy, (HILWA) has trained 100 undergraduates on advocacy and mobilisation capacity building as part of activities marking the Day of the African Child 2019.

Acting Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs Zulaihatu Madugu, stated this while speaking with Journalists during the taining in Gombe.

Madugu said the training was supported by the United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) field office Buachi.

According to her, at the end of the training, it is hoped that the undergraduate students would be vanguards in mobilising support either in their communities they live or wherever they live in a bid to get back girls back to school.

She said, “We are worried because if you go round today, you will see a lot of girls hawking around, some of them started school and then dropped out on the way. If we continue that way, it’s not going to be well for us in the society.”

Acting Chairman of Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board Hajiya Zulaihatu said they received a report that over 450, 000 children in Gombe State are out of school and that it could be higher than that.

“There was a national personnel audit that was conducted last year between April and June by the Universal Basic Commission and we are still awaiting the data, but in any case, the number is high.

“We hope that after the training, we will have a vanguard, especially for the hard to reach communities to mobilize parents, village heads, and religious leaders to send these children to school. UNICEF has given us support and we are prepared and we hope to get the children back to school. But the challenge is keeping them in school, which we have to partner with the parents,” she said.
