Gov Bala, please address plight of ASCOEA’s students

Your Excellency, I wish to use this medium to bring the nail-biting untold hardship of the Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, in Katagum LGA of Bauchi state, to your considerate and inclusive government’s notice on account of the deteriorating state of the entrance to the college, lack of network of intra-campus roads, cutting-off of electricity supply.

This state-owned college, which was founded in 1977, is endowed with all sorts of high-quality infrastructure except 5km internal roads and water drainage systems.

It is unfortunate that the deteriorating state of the entrance road, intra-campus road, lack of water drainage systems and lack of electricity supply in this college impacts students’ academic performances negatively as such many students lose their lectures whenever an inner tubes of their bicycles and motorcycles blow out, more especially during the rainy season and hot weather. Countless female students lose their lectures or tests because of either a hike in transport fare by tricycle operators or their refusal to drive on that badly damaged road since deep potholes on the road make driving very difficult and dangerous as vehicles keep maneuvering to avoid bumping into holes that often cause accidents despite the students drive very cautiously.

One of the final year female students of the college said, “It is very hard to get into the college during the rainy season because of the terrible dilapidation of the entrance road and lack of water drainage systems. So, internal road and water drainage systems are our major problems in the college”.

The immediate past administration promised to construct a 5km internal road in the college and all measurements were made, but the promise remained unfulfilled as it was made with a view to sourcing our votes in 2019 general elections.

Sir, permit me to intimate you that the massive high-quality buildings constructed by the TETFund are now in dire jeopardy in the college due to lack of water drainage systems that culminated in a scary water erosion across the college.

Obviously, lack of electricity supply is a major threat to the academic performances of the students in the college and causes serious disruption of activities in campus and research. It also leads to scarcity of water in the students’ dormitories, causing health risks. These dormitories are infested by mosquitoes as the environment is riddled with trash and contaminated water. It is pitiably that students often use torch to read at night.

In the current era of shift in deploying brand-new technological and pedagogical approaches and tools in tertiary education, it is vital to ensure availability of electricity supply in students’ dormitories, laboratories and lecture halls in order to enhance their academic performances. But unfortunately, the reverse is the case in the ASCOEA as the entire students’ dormitories and lecture halls have been without electricity supply for barely six months as a result of the PHCN’s disconnection which is said to be associated with the college’s inability to pay their bill. This nail-biting menace resulted in water scarcity in students’ dormitories and halls. So, the provost of the ASCOEA should be reminded that limiting electricity supply in the staff quarters is absolutely unscrupulous and violates the students’ academic rights.

Sir, without mincing words, permit me to draw your attention to the fact that the entire dragging untold plight of the students in this college has to do with the state’s TSA policy. This TSA policy is totally unblemished as it is a good move to facilitate efficient payment mechanisms, enhance the system of financial management and control, lower liquidity reserve needs and monitor the remittance of government revenues. Hence sir, this TSA policy should move the ASCOEA forward not backward in terms of top-notch infrastructure and modern pedagogical tools.

I, therefore, appeal to our considerate governor of Bauchi state, Senator Bala Mohammed, to help address untold hardship of the students of this college by constructing a 5km internal road along with water drainage systems and bringing back electricity supply to their dormitories and lecture halls.

Conclusively, the principles of democracy, social justice, egalitarianism and noble social etiquette could definitely endorse the South to clinch the APC presidential ticket even if it is unconstitutional. Every favour should be reciprocated by only good people and legitimate sons.
