Taraba state Governor Arc. Darius Ishaku on Saturday lauded Blueprint Newspaper for having an eagle eye to discover his performance in education.
Ishaku, who stated this in Jalingo while interacting with newsmen to mark his six years in office, expressed happiness that his administration since assumption of office six years ago made education a hub for the entire North-east.
He added that when he took mantle of leadership in 2015, Taraba state was very backward in Education.
“While on campaign tour in 2015, I found out that most of the schools in state were dilapidated.
” If you met the whole school, you would be lucky if any class had a roof; not to talk of several schools.You would hardly have maybe two, three, four regular teachers.
“What I saw on ground was less than five to six on the average, and when I resumed, it proved itself because I was looking at the average because there were no teachers, no classrooms” he noted.
He maintained that his administration in 2015 inherited an education sector that was completely decayed.
“When we came on board in 2015, education was low in terms of performance, infrastructure and enrollment. WAEC performance was less than 20 percent.
“Most of the schools had no basic infrastructure and students’ enrollment was very poor because people were sending their children to schools in neighbouring states. we embarked on a serious restructuring of our schools to make the environment safe and conducive for learning.
“We transformed the school system within few months that we stated seeing some dramatic changes in performance of students in WAEC from less than 20 percent in 2015 to 63 per cent in 2016, 73.5 percent in 2017, and 85.4 percent in 2019” he said.
