Yobe state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has called on federal government to place salaries, pension and gratuity on first line charge.
Gaidam, who was speaking during the commissioning of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) headquarters in Abuja, also said governors in the country have no reason whatsoever to owe workers salaries or pension.
The governor therefore called on the federal and state governments to make a policy to ensure that payment of salary, pension and gratuity are placed on first line charge before making any other expenditure when money drops from the federation account.
The governor further advised state governors owing backlog of salary, pension and gratuity arrears to make it a policy to ensure they prioritise the payment.
“I advice them to be prudent and accountable to the management of the scare resources that are accruing from the federation account.
If you are prudent and organized, it helps you to properly plan on how to apply the little resources you receive from the federal government.
If you are prudent, your actually should be able to achieve paying worker’s salary and achieve all others things in your plan,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called on the federal government to support its bid to establish a medical centre that will cater for retirees who have served the country meritoriously.
President of the union, Dr Abel Afolayan who made the appeal said such a medical centre dedicated to pensioners will offer cheap and affordable healthcare.
