Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bauchi state chapter, Alhaji Yayanuwa Zainabari, has declared that the attitude of some governors to anoint “unpopular candidates in the past” was among the problems that led to the failure of the party in the 2015 general elections.
Zainabari made the declaration yesterday while interacting with newsmen in Bauchi after the commissioning of local government offices of the party in Ningi, Warji and Ganjuwa local government areas.
He said the present PDP officials were working round the clock to “change the changers” who took over power from them in 2019 due to the failures of the APC-led government to fulfill campaign promises.
“We went round states where PDP has governors in the North-east; here we went to Gombe and Taraba states. We told their governors that the PDP governments in the past lost elections because they appointed unpopular candidates. But, today, we have learnt our lessons; we don’t want to repeat the same mistakes. Beginning from ward delegates up to Presidential elections, we will elect the people’s choice; we will respect the wishes of the people. If a delegate is elected by the people, he too will elect the candidate that the majority of the people want,” he said.
The PDP spokesman said the party “intends to re-open all the offices in the 20 local government areas as part of the strategies to bring back the party’s lost glory and possibly regain power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.”
On what the party needed to do to win the election, Zainabari said: “We have to convince Nigerians. You as a marketer, you have taken a product that was in the market before to the people and they waived you away, saying we don’t want it because it’s not effective. You know what you sold before, you had done a post-mortem analysis on what went wrong with the product, what is it that the people don’t like, what are those things that affected the product that our people used to love so much. That it was the beauty of every home, then you will get it right.”
He expressed gratitude to the party’s supporters and congratulated those “who are defecting to the PDP in the state on a daily basis because of its laudable programmes.”
