Grassroots: Imo govt pledges support for soccer competition

The Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma, has pledged government support for grassroots football tournaments in the State.

The governor gave the assurance at the just concluded Tony Awusaku football tournament held in Oboama Nguru community.

At the well organised tourney, Umuoma Oboama FC, defeated Amaku Oboama FC and was the winner of the coveted trophy at stake.

Represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum in Imo State, Hon. Ikay Njoku, the governor assured youths of Oboama Nguru, Aboh Mbaise local  government area that the government of Imo state would support the next edition of Tony Awusaku’s soccer competition.

He said, “Governor Hope Uzodimma has decided to encourage the youths to make the best use of the 2nd edition of the annual competition to showcase their talents in order to transform them to international soccer stars.

“Our governor is already making conspicuous impact in various sectors and there is need for all and sundry to support his government.”

He then commended Sir Tony Awusaku and his wife, Truddy, for sponsoring the annual competition, lauding their sacrifice and commitments to youth empowerment in the State.

The hallmarks of the event was decoration of players with medals, by the Imo State Referees Association and the presentations of the golden glove, golden boot and the most valuable player awards to deserving players by dignitaries and other sport stakeholders present.
