Greed, glamour pushing young Nigerians into politics – Gemade

Former senator representing Benue North-east, Barnabas Gemade has lamented the greed among young politicians most of whom he said get into politics for glamour and embezzlement of public funds.

Gemade spoke at his home town, Kornya Sunday at a reception to mark his return from Senate said the level of greed is becoming alarming such that it is now very difficult for the older politicians to give advice to new and upcoming politicians.

He also said it was shameful that glamour among politicians and not service was being revered by most Nigerians adding that people clamour more around political office holders who steal public funds to enrich themselves.

“This is a big shame for this country that the greed element in the younger people is alarming. I keep wondering what we can tell them, because glamour is becoming very attractive.

“The more glamourous a person is in office the younger people follow such a person. We have seen many example were someone goes into office without a car and within months the persons owns two or three cars and or without a house and after four years or eight, he have mansions all over the place.

“And these set of people are very proud to say that they are rich men.’’

On why he did petition the incumbent Gabriel Suswam at the Tribunal, Gemade said though he was rigged out during the 2019 National Assembly election, he did not go to court because he did not want the court to compel his people to accept him.

“At my age, I should not be struggling in court with younger people over issues of election. Whether I was rigged out or the election was stolen, I think God wanted it so. Let the people also have an experience of another person in that office so that they can compare and see whether I was good or not,’’ he said.

He assured the people that he was not going to quit politics noting that if he did, nobody would be there to do the things he had been doing for the society

He said he made laudable marks while serving as the Senator representing Benue North east for two terms.

He stated that he had over 300 projects to his credit, scattered all over the 84 councils and wards that made up his senatorial district.

“I sponsored a bill for establishment of Federal Polytechnic Adikpo and College of Education (Technical) Kornya and work have begun in earnest on the two high institutions.

”One of my motions on killings in Nigeria made the Senate to tour six states in the North. I moved many motions on killings, armed banditry and terrorism,” he said.
