Group blasts NASS, APC over leadership tussle

A civil society group, Society for Educational Development and Socio-Democratic Activities (SEDSAC), has lambasted members of the National Assembly and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the tussle for the 9th Assembly leadership.

In a statement issued by Umar Hamisu Kofar Na’isa in Kano Thursday, the group stated that the dispute between some members of the National Assembly and APC had overheated the polity.

According to the group, the development has also exposed inadequacy of the real concept of democratic capacity among members of the major political parties.

SEDSAC also stated that the “strong aspiration of leadership of the legislature is contrary to the interest of the public,” adding that it was a motive for the political elite to achieve their goal.

It further lamented that “instead the lawmakers to focus on measures to tackle the economic and security challenges bedeviling Nigeria, they are busy quarrelling over leadership of the 9th Assembly.”

The statement read in part: “Similarly, there ware misunderstanding between the 8th Assembly and the executive arms of government, which was a negative implication to democracy and socio-economic development of the country in the first tenure.

“In view of the foregoing, SEDSAC advocates for maximum cooperation between the three arms of government into harmonisation profess towards getting things done.”

The group, therefore, called for reconciliation between NASS members and the ruling party on the issue.

SEDSAC also urged upholding consensus which, it stated, “is essential to the development of democracy in the country.”
