Group calls for policy formulation on women sanitary pads

The Convener of Stewards of the Environment for Sustainable Change Initiative – Stop Don’t Drop, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Hadiza Ujo has called for sustainable and environmental-friendly alternatives for women sanitary pads.

The initiative is in support of the German Green Foundation – Heinrich Boell Stiftung (HBS), Coca Cola and CLIMATTERS in celebration of the just concluded International women’s day, seeks to highlight the impact of women’s sanitary waste on the environment.

The programme is tagged  “The woman , her period and the environment”Finding Viable Answers and Sustainable Solution to Sanitary Waste”

She said online research has it that a woman uses between 11,000-16,000 sanitary products all through her menstrual years.

She said good number of those sanitary products have over 50% plastic and end up in our environment.

“Some of the sanitary waste still go back to our water bodies because goat pick it from the dumb site and eat and fishes pick it in the water and eats and all these animals we eat them ,“she said .

Hadiza said women should opt for menstrual cups which is made of silicon and absolves menstrual blood and can easily be washed and re-used .

She said there are some fabric materials which are made of fabrics and can be washed and also re-used adding that it will also empower women at the rural community.
