A socio-cultural group, Oganihu Ebonyi, comprising a group of patriots pushing for the progress and sustainable development of Ebonyi state, has condemned reported killings in Effium, Ohaukwu local government area of the state.

In a statement made available to Blueprint Monday, signed by its Convener, Dr. Laz Ude Eze, the group called on the state government and security agencies to urgently intervene in curbing further loss of lives and property in the community.

The statement reads: “Oganihu Ebonyi has reviewed the security situation in the state and wishes to state that we condemn the reported killings in Effium, Ohaukwu LGA in the strongest terms. Eight persons have been reportedly killed and properties destroyed.

“We also condemn the killings that have been reported in Abakaliki and other parts of the state in the past couple of months, including the recent killing of three policemen in Onueke Ezza. We note that the primary responsibility of government is to protect lives and property, therefore, the Ebonyi State government must live up to this responsibility and stop future waste of precious lives.

“We commend the Nigeria Police Force and the Ebonyi State Government for the swift arrest of suspects in relation to the Effium killings. We demand that they should be thoroughly investigated and those found guilty must be punished accordingly. We warn political actors not to politicise security issues as it will not be in the best interest of the state.

“We demand justice for all victims of the killings and destructions. We also demand a quick resolution of all the underlying causes of the killings in the state and achieve a sustainable peace, maka oganihu Ebonyi state.”
