Group insists Goje best for senate leadership

The Advocacy Group for Senator Danjuma Goje – one of the likely aspirants for the position of 9th senate president- has urged senators-elect to choose their principal officers on merit and competence.

The group, whose members are canvassing support for the senator who though is yet to publicly declare his ambition, said Goje one of the longest serving senators, was the best among the lots to lead the 9th senate.

Accordingly, the group appealed to the senators of the 9th senate to guard against letting the legislature subjugated to the executive or any imposition.

Further, the group urged the senators not to allow themselves to be force to accept any undemocratic imposition urging instead that they should ensure the independence of the legislature by making a choice that reflect the understanding.

A statement signed by the group’s secretary Musa Ibrahim discountenanced directives of some leaders of the APC to the senators-elect to vote only along party lines stressing that this negates democratic spirit and national unity.

“We are deeply worried by the way the honorable members of the red chamber are constantly being reminded to vote along party lines ditching the democratic value of free choice which is the exclusive right of the senators themselves.

Making a point for Goje to be considered for the job, the group said: “The only candidate that is eminently qualified for the job. He was a minister and governor for eight years, before becoming a senator.”

“As a governor of Gombe state, by all standards, Goje can be described as the father of the modern Gombe state. His achievements speak for him in all nook and cranny of the state

“Prudence and leadership style earned him the appointment as chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation. This is a responsibility that is only giving to trusted and financially disciplined personalities”, the statement said.
