Group petitions NUJ over libelous publications

A Benin City-based group, Edo Transformation League has petitioned the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over alleged libelous publications authored by John Mayaki, a former aide to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

In the petition addressed to the national president of  NUJ, and endorsed by  its national coordinator,  Broderick Owamagbe Enabulele, the group said:  “Nigerian press has been the lifeline inspiring a sense of hope to most traumatised Nigerians.”

Whilst urging the union to reign-in on Mayaki, the group said: “we urge you to kindly summon an editorial panel to read or review all junk publication, put in circulation in the name of Edo APC factional politics by one John Mayaki who pride himself as Joseph Goebbels of Edo People’s Movement.”

The Edo group bemoaned a recent publication credited to Mayaki and titled “Trouble in Obaseki’s illegal Assembly: Embittered Okiye threatens to shut EDHA, run abroad”.

Enabulele said:  “The publication is one of the mischievous figment of his cruel imagination, aimed at bringing down all institutions of government in Edo state, while oiling the heartless ego of his paymaster.

“There is no single truth in this publication, other than to enthrone a perception of hate-insurgency on the part of Edo people against Edo state government,” he said.
