Group seeks emergency on education in the North

A group of intellectuals from the North under the aegis of Arewa  Education Renaissance Initiative (AERI) has called for emergency interventions from relevant stakeholders on the disastrous state of education in the North.

The group in a statement issued by its national coordinator,   Mallam Lawal Kankia Ibrahim, in Abuja on Saturday, said the state of education in the North is a major disaster that needs total and decisive response from governments, communities and individuals.

According to him, by way of identifying the problems, AERI held its maiden general meeting in Abuja on Saturday, March 14, 2020 where critical reviews of the state of education in the North, particularly its abysmal standards, were made.

Urgent needs, he added, were observed to be needed from relevant stakeholders in tackling the problems   of out of school children, almajiri system, girl-child education and the relationships between quality of education, development and security.

The group stressed that, “leadership at all levels needs to re-dedicate itself and re-discover the political will to deal with all problems relating to backwardness of  education  in the North.”

The statement said “all forms of education in the North represent a major disaster that needs total and decisive response from governments, communities and Individuals.

“Leadership at all levels needs to re-dedicate itself and re-discover the political will to deal with the problems related to education in the North, and that;

“There is tremendous interest at all levels of northern communities that needs to be mobilised and harmonised to support all initiatives towards addressing the foundations of education in the North and commence the process of rebuilding education values and structures that will give the region a new lease of life and a better chance to survive as a community.”
