Group unveils sexual violence kits in Jos

The United States Institute of Peace, in partnership with West Africa Network of Peace Building (WANEP) and Center for Peace Advancement in Nigeria (CEPAN), has Wednesday unveiled its tool kits for response to sexual and gender-based violence in Jos.

The toolkits written in both English and Hausa, titled: “Effective response to sexual violence in Jos North Local Government of Plateau State -A tool book for service providers,” was presented by Nigeria’s coordinator of Justice and Security Dialogue (JSD), Isoioma Kemakolam, during a press briefing.

She said the toolkit is for use by the Police, community leaders, and Government service providers in health, justice and social welfare, in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Jos.

The Gender crime officer in charge of Jos North, Rev. Samuel Goro, said gender crime desk  will be officially launched by the Plateau state Commissioner of Police, at Nasarawa Gwom Police station on Thursday.

According to him, the  Commissioner of Police, Undie Addie, had in 2018, approved their request to set up gender crime desk within the state police command.

“The creation of the gender crime desk will also bring the Nigeria Police Force Plateau State Command, in line with international, regional, national and State conventions like the African charter on human and People’s rights” he said.

Rev. Goro, stressed that four trained officers will manned the desk as designated SGBV focal points in Jos North.

“..the gender desk hopes to increase the capacity of the Police to rapidly and appropriately respond and investigate reports of  SGBV,” he added.

Goro further said their objectives, are to increase Police capacity in counseling survivors, assist survivors in accessing appropriate health, legal and psycho-social support services among others.
