Guard paraded for ‘ritual killing

Th e Anambra state Police Command has paraded a security guard alleged to have killed an unidentifi ed person for ritual purposes and buried him in a shallow grave. Parading the suspect in Awka, the Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the state, Mr Garba Umar, said that “On the night of June 22, 2017, the suspect while on duty as a security guard, on the premises of a distributor to NBL located along Oko Road, Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area, killed a person yet to be identifi ed. “Th e suspect buried the corpse in a shallow grave within the premises and failed to report the incident to anyone including his employer and co-workers.

” He explained that workers around the area on June 26, 2017, perceived an off ensive odour within the premises sand after a search of the area uncovered an unusual sight at a portion of the premises. Umar said the workers confronted the vigilante with their fi ndings and forced him to dig out the area after he denied knowledge of what was in the ground and he subsequently confessed to killing an intruder into the premises on the night of June 22. “Preliminary investigation revealed the suspect beheaded the corpse, burnt it, before burying it in the shallow grave.

Th e suspect is helping in the investigation as ritual killing is suspected,” Umar added. He said items recovered from the suspect include a pump action, revolver gun, cell phones, sim cards, bloodsoaked blanket and wrapper, noting that the suspect would soon be charged to court. While assuring of the command’s readiness to protect lives and property by ensuring a peaceful and crime-free society; he disclosed that the command had put in place intelligence-led policing and crime prevention strategies to clamp down on criminals arrested around 5am I went to that transformer to operate. Th e one I just cut can fetch me N1,300.” Th e scrap metal dealer, whom the suspect fi ngered as his buyer, Abdulsamod Yau, also confessed that he has bought cable from him Elegbede at least seven times. Th e second suspect, Andrew Onoriode 25, who claimed to be a casual staff of Nigerian Bottling Company, Agidingbi plant, Ikeja, was arrested behind Shoprite, Ikeja, with armoured cable, believed to have been stolen. A police source told our correspondent that the cable was cut from the network supplying powers to some of the buildings around the Secretariat. Th e two suspects have been transferred to the Lagos State Taskforce for prosecution.
