Guber polls: Enugu APC protests, wants election postponed

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu state Thursday, protested at the office of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) asking for postponement of the governorship and state Assembly elections scheduled for tomorrow.

The party, which also announced restoration of Senator Ayogu Eze as the authentic governorship candidate by the Court of Appeal, said the exercise should be shifted to enable them mobilise like others had done for the polls.

Further, the Enugu state chapter of the APC asked the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Emeka Ononamadu, to resign from his job for alleged compromise of his office.

In a protest at the INEC office in Enugu, the state party chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye, accused the REC of compromise prior to the election.

The party accused the REC of giving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials unilateral access to the Central Bank of Nigeria in Enugu, where the sensitive materials were allegedly distributed on Wednesday.

Also, he stated that the INEC had given the result sheets and other sensitive materials to the PDP stalwarts and demanded for postponement of the election to remedy the situation.

According to him, following the earlier removal of its candidate from INEC manifest, the party supports were dissuaded, adding that since the mandate has been restored, the party needed extended time to re-prepare for the election.

The REC while responding, told the protesters that he too was a product of protest from the civil society and denied all the allegations against him.
