Gunmen attack Eika Police station in Kogi, kill duty officer

Gunmen early Friday attacked the Police Area Command’s office at Eika-Ohizenyi in Okehi local government area of Kogi state and killed a police officer on duty who was popularly known as Yellow.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Egbuka, who visited the scene of the attack a few hours later for an on-the-spot assessment, ordered the deployment of additional operational assets consisting of operatives of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Unit, State Intelligence Bureau in synergy with other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relation Officer, William Aya, in Lokoja Friday.

The statement indicated that part of the Area Command Office was razed by dynamites used by the attackers and that a police inspector died in the exchange of fire with the hoodlums.

A resident, Malam Momoh Abubakar, told our correspondent that the attackers invaded the station around 12:15a.m, adding that the first bomb they threw into the station woke many residents while the second bomb brought down parts of the station.

He also revealed that the only police officer on duty, Mr. Jibril, popularly known as Yellow was killed in the attack while the only operational vehicle in the station was also bombed.

He said, “I am using this medium to appeal to security agents to be proactive and respond quickly to this type of incident because the gunmen spent more than two hours operating freely without any interference.

“The first attack of the station occurred on Friday and this second one which happened after five years also took place on Friday and to our surprise nobody has been arrested in connection to the attack.

“As I am talking to you now, there is fear and apprehension in the Eika community as the people have remained indoors for fear of being attacked. We are appealing to the government to beam its searchlights on this area because the attacks are becoming unbearable.”
