Gunmen attack police officers, cart away riffles in Asaba

Gunmen weekend unleashed terror on a police inspector and two other junior officers attached to the Delta state police command.

The attack by the suspected hoodlums left two police men with varying degrees of injury.

The incident occurred in Asaba, the state capital where the command headquarters and over five divisional police headquarters are situated.

Two rifles of the wounded policemen were also reportedly taken away by the bandits during the attack on the operatives who were said to be on a check point in Asaba.

The police officers were reportedly said to be at the check point at Inter-bau roundabout by ASCON oil fuel station in Asaba, where the attack took place.

Eyewitness account said the victims were said to have sustained deep machete cuts from the hoodlums who allegedly disarmed two of the police officers.

It was further gathered that the hoodlums attacked the policemen after about 15 minutes that the police patrol van left with the driver and one of the officers leaving only three officers behind at the check point.

The source stated that the victims’ attention was on a driver they were directing to park for a check when about four of the suspected hoodlums struck and attacked them with machete and made away with their riffles, including that of Inspector Francis.

The only lucky one of them was the police corporal who was said to have escaped with his riffle but suffered machete cuts on his hand.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke however denied knowledge of the incident when called for confirmation.
