Halt the trenches

This is to bring to your notice of a grand act of misappropriation that is about to happen in Borno state in the name of fighting terror. Zulum is about to repeat the mistakes of his predecessor. During a visit to the University of Maiduguri, the governor directed his commissioner of works to come and increase the depth of the trenches surrounding the university.

At the risk of being labeled as what corrupt politicians would call ‘a market spoiler’, I hereby bring to you the bad news of a ploy by the Borno state in the name of embarking in the most obsolete and ineffective project of stopping insurgents from gaining entrance to the University. During Kashim’s era, the government in what it termed as a way to curtail the incessant attacks to Unimaid by the mindless terror group approved a whooping N50 million to dig trenches. Who told them that digging trench is best of ways to stop the terrorists who have unparalleled knowledge of desert terrains and maneuverability from staging attacks? Did the deep trenches of Giwa barracks stop Boko Haram from gaining access to the barracks to free inmates, loot weapons and kill people? At this juncture, I call on everyone to please call the attention of the Borno State government to stop the idea of digging the trenches and channel the money to community policing and engaging hunters to end this war. More importantly, it will even be good to open the door of dialogue like Zamfara state government is doing.

Muhammad Kime,

Maiduguri.
