In celebration of the International Week of the Deaf, the Deaf Resource Centre, in collaboration with the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria, Rotary Club Abuja-Gwarinpa and Abuja-Jabi district is presently holding an awareness campaign for Federal Capital Territory (FCT) residents to draw attention to the plight of deaf people in Nigeria.
The theme for 2020 is “Reaffirming deaf people’s human right”, with the rally holding at Unity Fountain in Abuja.
According to the associations, the aim of the campaign was to ensure that “Sign language is made official language in Nigeria, Sign language interpreters should be in hospitals to facilitate access to health care by deaf patients, early years childhood education for the deaf children close to their homes, among others.”
