Hausa language ‘ll be used only in primary 1 to 3, Yobe clarifies

Following the reactions generated by the media reports on the adoption of hausa language as medium of instruction in primary schools in Yobe state, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has clarified that only pupils in primary 1 and 2 will be taught completely in hausa while those in primary 3 will be taught in both hausa and English languages.

Recall that Yobe SUBEB in collaboration with world Bank and Northern Education Initiative (NEI Plus) organized a workshop to its teachers on the use of Hausa language in primary schools held at Riveredge hotel Bauchi on Monday.

But the director social mobilization of the board Sama’ila Machina in a press release issued to our correspondent says only Primary one pupils in ten local government areas participating in the intensive literacy programme of the World Bank supported Better Education Service Delivery For All (BESDA) will be taught in the mother tongue.

The selected local governments according to him include Fune, Nangere, Tarmuwa, Bulsari, Machina, Jakusko, Yusufari and Geidam as well as Yunusari and Karasuwa.

Machina who doubles as BESDA Focal person in the state stated that under the BESDA programme northern states participating in the programme are to teach primary 1-3 in Hausa.

“On the other hand, states in south east and south south  are to teach their primary1-3 in Igbo language, while states in the south west are to teach their pupils in Yoruba.” He said

This according to him, is the reason why Yobe state BESDA adopted the Northern Education Initiative Plus NEI+’s “Mu Karanta Let’s Read Model” as there is already developed materials for the implementation of the programme.
