Health: FG inaugurates parastatal, agencies, institutions’ governing boards

The federal government has inaugurated governing boards of parastatal, agencies and institutions, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health.
Inaugurating the boards yesterday in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said it was a demonstration of the commitment of the federal government towards strengthening the health sector, by ensuring transparency, accountability and fiscal responsibility.
Adewole said the Governing Boards were “creations of statutes, and their responsibilities are to give policy direction to the management of Institutions,” adding that their appointments “should be seen as an opportunity to make useful and selfless contributions towards uplifting health care service delivery in Nigeria.”
He said: “This ceremony marks one of the most significant steps this administration is taking towards giving the Health sector a new and better image. I, therefore, wish to emphasise that Government expects no less. Your agencies are critical to the achievement of developmental goals of government, being implementing entities of the health sector. You are all enjoined to commit to achieving this mandate and to live above board.
“For health institutions to have the desired impact on the lives of our citizens, they must be of the right quality, skill mix and right attitude to service delivery.
“It is your responsibility as chairmen and members of the Governing Boards to bring about this desired change in the short term. You must acquaint yourselves with the mandates as contained in the enabling Act of your parastatal, agency and institution.”
Adewole further urged them to shun corruption in line with the present administration’s zero tolerance for graft.
Responding, on behalf of others, the Chairman of University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, Alhaji Isa Bello-Sani, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for finding them worthy to serve the country.
Bello-Sani further assured that the boards would live up to expectations, and lift the health sector to amiable heights.
Inaugurated were Governing boards of Teaching Hospitals, Federal Medical Centres, National Orthopaedic Hospitals, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospitals, National Health Insurance Scheme and National Primary Health Care Development Agency.
