Herdmen allegedly rape woman to death in Anambra community

The people of Ebenebe, Awka North Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra state, Tuesday, confirmed the death of a middle-aged woman who was allegedly raped to a coma in a farmland in the community by suspected herdsmen some months ago.

According to the President-general of Ebenebe, Mr Paul Nnatuanya, the woman whose name was given as Agnes Okekpe died in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state from where she had relocated to live in his (Nnatuanya) community, in search of greener pasture at time of the incident.

Nnatuanya, who lamented that herders had left most farmers in the community jobless and farmlands desolate, said, “The information we got from her people was that she had died. After she was raped to coma, our people took her to the hospital where she was revived. She died as a result of the trauma she suffered.

“After she was discharged from the hospital, she travelled back to her place in Ebonyi State; perhaps, to continue treatment from there. She didn’t continue with the business she came for.”
The woman, it was learnt, was working for her client on farmland in the community late last year when some suspected Fulani herdsmen who came with a herd of cattle for grazing allegedly had unlawful knowledge of her, leading her to lose consciousness.

The issue led heads of security agencies in the state, traditional rulers, heads of communities and representatives of Ebenebe community and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association to meet to resolve the impasse.
Sources from the community had alleged that the suspects equally took N16,000 which the victim had tied around her waist.
