President Muhammadu Buhari has said the federal government will not allow people who take up arms against the defenceless in the society to go unpunished.
The president stated this yesterday in Makurdi through the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Danbazzaau, whom he sent to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue over the killings in Guma and Logo local government areas of the state.
The minister while speaking on behalf president Buhari said efforts would be intensifi ed to fish out the perpetrators and described the people that carried out the heinous act as criminals who would be meted with justice.
He condoled with the families that lost their loved ones in the attack.
In his remark, governor Ortom assured the people that the AntiOpen Grazing Law had come to stay, adding that their land cannot be taken away from them by whatever guise.
The governor stressed that, ranching was the best global practice not only for cattle but all livestock.
“Therefore, the law was not targeted at any ethnic group.
The law was initiated after diligent as well as due consultations and is in the best interest of everybody because it is meant to protect both herdsmen as well as farmers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the recent massacre in Benue, Rivers, Kaduna and other states as extremely wicked and horrifying.
While commiserating with the families of the victims, the opposition party asked the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress to search their conscience over the tragedies.
In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, PDP said it was inexcusable that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC federal government failed to take measures that could have averted the killings, particularly in Benue state.
Also in Kaduna state, some persons were killed on Monday night in separate attacks on two villages in Sanga local government area.
Following the attacks in Benue, angry youth and residents marched in protest on the street on Wednesday in Makurdi, the state capital.
