High flying Wikki, Jets taste first defeat

It was a bad weekend for frontrunners Wikki Tourists of Bauchi and Jos-based Mighty Jets as both teams suffered their first defeat in the four-week-old Nigeria National League (NNL) in the hands of Adamawa United and Kwara United, respectively, over the weekend.

Adamawa beat Wikki by an odd goal in Yola, while Jets crashed in Ilorin where Kwara won by one goal to keep pressure on the table toppers. This was the first loss in the league by Wikki and Mighty Jets but they are still leading the pack.

Plateau United’s 1 – 0 victory over Niger Tornadoes landed the team on the same seven points with Jets and Adamawa just as Road Safety and TEAP are inching towards the relegation zone after they ended their weekend encounter in a scoreless draw.

Also, bottom-placed Sokoto United ran amok in their home match by hammering struggling Kaduna-based DSS by 3 – 0 in Sokoto. This result will be the needed tonic for the club need to play safe in season if they keep up the pace and continue to post this type of impressive result.

In Division B, Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) got the right anointing and sent back resurrected Stationery Stores to their graves with 4 – 0 thumping in a Lagos derby. Thae score line is strong warning to other teams in the league.
In Abeokuta, Gateway United defeated visiting Bendel Insurance FC by a lone goal in a tough match watched by a large number of football followers.
