High prices of commodities

The incessant increases in prices of commodities in many markets in some parts of Nigeria are alarming. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) the prices of some food items have shot up by 30 percent in many markets.

Nigeria has more than 70 per cent of its populace living below the poverty line, and unfortunately, as the demand for goods and services increase, so the prices of such goods and services increase in the market. Consumers and traders are groaning over the rapid rise in the prices of food items coupled with the security challenges in the country.

Recently, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) warned that food crisis was looming in Africa particularly in Nigeria due to the ravaging effect of Covid-19 and displacements of farmers. Nigerians are lamenting, calling on the government to find a solution in tackling the skyrocketing prices of food items, and just as the saying goes “A hungry man is an angry man”.
