Hoodlum nabbed as explosion rocks Akwa Ibom INEC office

Barely three days after hoodlums set the office of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ablaze in Ibesikpo Asutan local government area, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly planted by hoodlums exploded at INEC in Mkpat Enin local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

 Blueprint gathered that the device exploded at the premises of INEC, while collation of governorship and state Assembly elections results were ongoing.

 At the time of filing this report, it was not clear whether there were casualty. Another IED set for detonation few minutes after, were immediately discovered inside the generator room and defused by security agencies on duties.

Meanwhile, two suspects said to be hired mercenaries from neighbouring Rivers state, have been arrested by soldiers and handed over to the Police.

 The sum of N200,000, according to security sources were found on them.

 The Commissioner for Economic Development, Mr. Ekong Sampson, who monitored the collation, condemned the attack and warned aggrieved politicians not to put the state on flame.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Odiko Macdon, confirmed the attack.

“We are aware of the incident but I am yet to be fully briefed on the matter. I have asked for the report to be transmitted to me and as soon as I get the details, we will let the world know”, Macdon said.
