Housing Deficit: Expert asks FG to extend infrastructure to districts

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aadum and Company, Mr. Godswill Adum, has called on the federal government to provide massive infrastructure nationwide.
Adum, who spoke with our reporter in Abuja, yesterday, explained that the massive provision of infrastructure across the country would ease risk and difficulties of building houses and subsequently reduce the huge housing deficit in the country.
Nigeria is said to have an estimated 17 million housing deficit.
He said: “To start with, if you say Nigeria has 17million housing deficit, it’s even under estimated because what is on ground now is much more than that.
We have a very high rate of housing deficit as a country, and I believe that what government can do to reduce this rate is to create massive infrastructure into all available districts in town so that people can build.
“We have districts in Abuja and despite the lack of infrastructure, people have gone ahead to build houses in those districts even when there is no road or electricity there.
If the government opens up infrastructure in all the districts, people will find it easy to build more houses.
“Another aspect is the cost of building materials, which I think government should look into because a lot of building materials we have for construction today is imported ,and when you look at the dollar exchange rate, it’s high to purchase these materials.
“But government can create a local manufacturing outlet where some of these materials can be done locally in order to reduce cost and make it available for the people.
