How to reverse medical tourism – Gowon

Ex-Head of State Yakubu Gown has praised the introduction of endowment funds for University Teaching Hospitals.

He said the move is capable of helping to reverse “the burden of medical tourism in Nigeria”.

Gowon stated this during the 46th founders’ day of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH)/Endowment fund in Benin City,  Edo state.

The ex-Head of State and his wife, Victoria chaired the occasion.

He lauded the visionary leadership of late Samuel Ogbemudia and Prof. T. Bello-Osagie in the establishment of the Hospital.

According to him, “the services had greatly expanded since inception and today, it has almost tripled its bed capacity and leading health services.”

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki explained that the hospital is reputed for the first successful sterm cell transplant and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)  in Nigeria.

Obaseki said the Hospital has been repositioned to meet the vision and mission of the founding fathers of the Hospital.
