How UniCal lost N1.3bn property to #EndSARS protest – Pro Chancellor

The pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal), Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, has said about N1.3 billion worth of the school property were destroyed on October 24, 2020 when hoodlums hijacked the endSARS protest.

Sen Nwaogu who said this in Calabar, Monday, during a press conference, lamented that adequate attention had not been given to the destructions in UniCal by authorities in both the state and federal levels.

“The hoodlums invaded the University of Calabar campus as in an open warfare without restraint from the security agencies. It is sad that the scale of destruction in our institution of learning, the University of Calabar, has not been given the due attention it deserves.

“The cost implication of this unwholesome development is a staggering N1.3 billion. This is a serious setback to our university.

“They had a field day in fulfilling their criminal and barbaric intentions against the institution by attacking the following places and offices: Academic Publishing Centre, New Medical College, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Unical Hotel and Conference Centre.

“They stole sensitive materials in each of these places-gadgets, computers, servers, refrigerators, furniture, television sets, aluminum windows and doors, laboratory equipment, mattresses, generating plants, armored cables, etc. What could not be taken away by the marauders was destroyed
beyond repair, to demonstrate that the action was premeditated.

“Today Unical is bleeding seriously, because of the attack. Indeed, the university of Calabar has been dragged backward by at least 5 years, which can be very exhausting,” she stated.

Senator Nwaogu therefore appealed to “all well-meaning and public spirited individuals, intervention agencies of government to come to the assistance of the University.”
