Huge resources lost to medical tourism – Minister

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has stated that Nigeria is losing huge resources to medical treatment abroad, especially those involving highly placed public officials.

According to him, medical tourism was a problem the ministry of health is yearly contending with, saying “it is about people who have lost confidence in the nation’s health system”, adding that the problem bothers on lack of equipment and skills of specialised field of medical practice by doctors.

Ehanire, however, explained that the ministry is liaising with embassies of foreign countries with a view to bringing on board professionals in the medical field that can come and work in Nigeria and solve this problem.

He further disclosed that the Nigerian health authorities will deploy doctors that are consultants abroad to gain experiences from hospitals in Europe and America as a way stopping the trend.

Further in his address before the House of Representatives Committee on the Diaspora, the Minister mired that there is need for specialized hospitals for the treatment of kidney failure and other similar sicknesses.
