Hunger looms in Anambra as herdsmen allegedly destroy houses, Farms produce

A concerned indigene of Mmiata Anam in Anambra-west local government area of Anambra state, Chief Mathias Ameke, has raised an alarm over an impending hunger and famine in his council area following an alleged invasion of Fulani herdsmen into the area.

Ameke, who is the State Chairman of Action Democratic Party (ADP), told Blueprint in Awka, the state capital that herdsmen have been destroying their agricultural produce and houses since November last year.

According to him, the wanton destruction of farmlands and houses were additional pains them since Anambra-west was one of the council areas devastated by the last year’s flood disaster.

“I can say that crops worth millions of naira had been destroyed so far by cattle. I learnt that each farmer borrowed not less than two hundred thousand naira loans payable with interest just to recover from the pains of flood disaster we experienced last year.

“The cattle are led into the farmlands by the herdsmen at 2am and at daytime, all the farmlands would be destroyed completely without compensation. The danger of this is that hunger is looming because Anambra West is the food basket of this state. Some of the farmers are scared to even live in the local government area. They are currently running to cities for safety and their houses were broken into by the suspected Fulani cattle rearers,” he alleged.

An attempt to confirm this report from the Anambra State Police Command proved abortive as the phone contact’s of the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO) was not connecting as at press time.
