IBB varsity, 15 others sign MoU for degree programme in Cyprus

The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL) alongside 15 other Nigerian universities have signed a joint degree programme agreement with Girne American University of Cyprus.

The collaborative pact will see undergraduates spending their first two to three years in IBBUL, and thereafter proceed to the foremost academic institution in Cyprus to complete their degree programme.

The programme, which is being coordinated and facilitated by the National Universities Commission (NUC), will involve several Nigerian universities.

At the ceremony to sign the vital document for the collaboration, chancellor of the American university, Dr. Serhat Akpinar, pledged his commitment to the success of the programme.

He said he will ensure the mutual relationship between Girne University and the Nigerian institutions encapsulates the area of research and faculty members’ exchange.

Representative of the NUC executive secretary, Mrs. Constance Goddy-Nnadi, who is also the commission’s director, skills development and entrepreneurship, affirmed the total support of the commission to the success of the study agreement, which she said will promote capacity-building and quality knowledge acquisition by Nigerian lecturers and students.

Vice chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, expressed delight that IBBUL was among the first few schools to leverage on the ‘amazing’ opportunity for the internationalisation of its programmes, and for IBBUL to attain global relevance.

“This exchange programme will conveniently and tremendously afford Nigerian youths and students the opportunity to study at a reputable international university. IBBUL is truly pleased to be part of this momentous event. We will do everything to ensure that the collaboration yields good fruits,” he said.

Institutions in the partnership include federal, state and private universities. Although, 15 Nigerian universities had earlier indicated interest in the MoU, only nine travelled to the city of Ercan in northern Cyprus, where the campus of Girne American University is located.

IBBUL, FUTMinna, Umar Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), Yobe State University, Taraba State University, Technical University Ibadan, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Enugu State University and Niger Delta University, are the nine institutions whose representatives attended the MoU signing ceremony in Cyprus.
