ICAN tasks members on new financial standards

Chairman, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Jos district society, Mr Emmanuel Unogwu, has charged members to adopt the new international financial standards management.

Unogwu gave the charge at a three-day workshop themed “Accounting Standards in the Tiers of Government” held in Jos, the Plateau state capital, saying that the workshop “is aimed at exposing our members to the new training on transparency, accountability and financial regulation standards through good reporting.”

He urged stakeholders in the financial sector to urgently brace up in the fight against corrupt officials serving in the public and private sectors by correcting errors and disciplining those found wanting.
In remarks, the ICAN chairman on Education, Mr Adedokun Rotimi, said ICAN in Plateau state was being threatened by the challenges of insecurity which had crippled the economy of many people over time in the past.

He said: “As peace is gradually returning to the state we are appealing to private and public to take advantage of ICAN to know the financial discipline and good knowledge of their organisation.”
He promised to partner with state government toward improving and increasing the knowledge of staff on training, retraining of workforce that would measure up with the present day practice of international reporting.

Rotimi stressed that ICAN was a professional body with numerous records of achievement in the area of transparency, accountability in reporting financial sector “so there is need for us to building confidence in our members who are down.”
He added that arrangement had been concluded to train auditors, and others responsible for handling issues of finances from the state to local government level.
