Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called on Nigerians, private and public sectors of human endeavour to join hand with the federal government in the fight against the scourge of corruption in the country.
Acting Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Bako Abdullahi, made the call in Lokoja yesterday during an international anti-corruption day, 2017 in Kogi state, organised by the North-central zonal office of the ICPC in collaboration with National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Action Aid Nigeria, the Voice of the Youth Initiative, Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID) and Initiative for Grassroots Advancement.
Abdullahi said corruption in the country “has hindered prosperity, frustrated democracy and blocked provision of infrastructure, as well as denying those who are eligible for gainful employment,” noting that “if it is not fight to standstill, the corruption will hampered the growth of the nation in the areas of health, education, politics, business, security , social life and places of worship.”
According to him, “it is noteworthy to remind us that corruption undermines the security of the state and erodes stability. It creates mutual distrust and sabotages the country’s economy and economic growth.”
Represented by the Head of Department in-charge of Investigations, Mr. Adedayo Kayode, the acting chairman said the forum was organised for stakeholders in the fight against corruption to enable them “come together to share ideas and rub minds on the best strategies to adopt in combating corruption and other related offences.”
In his remark, the chairman of the occasion, a former member of ICPC board, Alhaji Isah Ozi Salami, charged traditional rulers in the country to shun the attitude of giving titles to corrupt people “who have been investigated and jailed for financial offences,” adding that “such act can only contribute to propagation of corrupt practice rather than fighting the scourge.”
