Hasana Ibrahim, an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) from Adamawa state, who relocated to Abuja in 2013 due to the Boko Haram insurgency, has been given a new lease of life. With the successful completion of her free vocational training programme in fashion designing, Ibrahim who also received a sewing machine from the Non-Stop Empowerment and Girls Education Initiative (NSESGI), reveals to Business Starter, her plans to give back to the society by training other women. Until recently, the 32-year-old, mother of two could not support her family as she depended solely on her husband’s small income as a mason.
Then, she signed up for livelihood through the Non-Stop Empowerment and Girls Education Initiative (NSESGI), where women are trained to make cloths, beads, make ups among others at the centre.
Today, Ibrahim , who has now graduated as a fashion designer in the 3 months free training programme, hopes to train other women on how to make cloths as well as assist her husband financially.
It was a cheerful moment for Ibrahim, who was also given a sewing machine to empower herself and also assist her husband in fending for her family .
In a chat with Business Starter recently, she explained that she and her family escaped to Abuja as an Internal Displaced Person (IDP), following the spate of Insurgency in the state.
“When we came to Abuja in 2013 as IDP, it was very difficult for us to feed, then, one of my friends told me about the NGO and because I have always had passion for sewing cloths, I enrolled into the 3 months programme with the determination that I must succeed and assist my husband, ” she said.
Continuing, Ibrahim said: “Since he married me even back in Adamawa, my husband is the only one who provides for me, my little children and our aged parents through his labourer’s job and most times we don’t get to eat because it’s not every day he gets a job.
“Before now, at times, I will beg for money from people just to ensure we get food to eat but now with the fashion designing training and machine I have for sewing, I will go back to my state and train other women in sewing. I will also sew cloths for my children and family members.”
Hassana encouraged other women who believes all hope is lost to come out and make sure they get themselves into a training programme where they can learn a skill and become useful not only to their family but also to the society.
Also, the Executive Director of the NSESGI , Ajiya Nana Abdulrahman, explained that the first empowerment programme on September 28th, 2017, about 100 women and youths were empowered in Tailoring, Catering, Event management, Make-up, Gele, Hairdressing, Agricultural production among others.
She further explained that out of over 2,000 women and youths were trained for free by this organisation.
“Our graduands , those empowered and those being empowered cut across the 12 wards of AMAC and there is no elected councilor or political appointees that does not have graduands or persons empowered in the Non-Stop Empowerment programme,” she said.
The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abdullahi Adamu Candido, during the empowerment programme stated that the kits given to the women should be used to fend for themselves at home and make their ends meet.
According to him, most unemployed shouldn’t be loitering around offices and begging for money but rather use the opportunity to learn any skill so as to make themselves useful to the society.
Candido, also reminded politicians that politics is not a profession and so they should also get themselves equipped by learning a skill saying “politics is only a process that drag people into governance “.He urged people to identify with the NGO especially ladies, “It is better than loitering around offices, secretariat , disgracing your statues and undermining your integrity”.
