IFAD trains 100 Benue women on cassava recipe

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Benue state office has sponsored 100 women for training on cassava recipe at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan.
The state programme coordinator, Mr Emmanuel Igbaukum, who disclosed this yesterday in an interview with newsmen in Makurdi, said IFAD-Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) in the state had also sent 10 youths for training at IITA in various areas.
He noted that the trainings would afford them the opportunity to fend for themselves, pointing out that the trainings was targeted at the women and youths to enable them create jobs and wealth so that they could be useful to themselves and society at large.
He said that the trainings would also enable the women to improve on what they had been doing and would further step up foodsecurity.
He, however, lamented that most of the local government areas where IFAD-VCDP was intervening were attacked by Fulani herdsmen in recent time and it had affected agricultural activities seriously.
“The training is a big opportunity for the women because it will enable them to do assorted things with cassava thereby boosting their income.
“It is expected that the 100 women which were selected, 20 each from five LGAs of the state namely, Gwer, Guma, Logo, Okpokwu and Ogbadibo, will in turn step down their experience by training more women from each of the local government areas.
“Our partners, HarvestPlus, has also provided to the participants start-up kits such as gas cylinder, electric sealing and extruder machines, to enable them to produce Vitamin A garri, flour, chinchin and queen cake among many other things,” he added.
