IGP declares war on kidnappers

Deploys 600 Special Forces, 90 patrol vehicles

By Ezrel Tabiowo and Chizoba Ogbeche Abuja Determined to check the activities of kidnappers in the country, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has deployed 600 Special Forces and 90 high-caliber patrol vehicles to curb increasing cases of kidnapping along AbujaKaduna expressway.

Th e Senate Majority Leader, Ahmed Lawan, disclosed this yesterday during plenary. According to him, besides the 600 Special Forces and 90 patrol vehicles, the Nigerian Army and the Police have constituted a joint operation to contain incessant kidnapping on the same road. He told other senators that the IGP had briefed the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Police Aff airs about the latest eff orts to resolve kidnapping on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

Lawan, who came under Order 43, told the Senate that a joint meeting of the Senate and House of Representatives Police Aff airs Committee was held on Monday in his conference room on how to deal with the incessant kidnapping along Abuja-Kaduna road. He said the “mass kidnapping” and kidnapping of individuals have become a matter of grave concern to the two chambers, adding that the meeting requested for explanation from the Inspector General about what was going on. Lawan said the IGP told the committee that there was already a joint operation of the police and the army to deal with the situation. Th e IGP, he said, told the committee that the police contributed over 600 personnel and 90 patrol vehicles to patrol the road. Contributions from lawmakers were not allowed by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the day’s legislative business since the matter came under personal explanation.
