Ikpeazu flags off measles vaccination in Abia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, will flag off the 2018 Measles vaccination campaign today, March 8, 2018.
Addressing newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia state Programme Coordinator, Margaret Onwu, said the vaccination exercise will take place in the 17 local government areas of the state, and will last till March 20, 2018.
Onwu called on parents and caregivers to bring out their children from nine months to five years for vaccination, to health Centres nearest to them.
She explained that a temporary fixed post will be provided for those living far away from the designated health centres.
According to the Abia state Programme Coordinator, enough preparations and logistics have been provided to ensure a hitch free exercise.
She said: “We have house to house mobilizers, town announcers that will assist health workers to achieve the set target.”
She maintained that measles is caused by a virus which lives with us in a dirty environment, noting that it’s usually at its peak during dry season.
Mrs. Onwu also revealed that the government vaccinates children from time to time, noting that the first dose does not give 100% result, hence there is need to boost the dose to support the first one.
She therefore urged the media to assist on creating the much needed awareness, so that parents would bring their children for immunisation, adding that it is free, safe and saves lives.
