I’ll abolish new Kano emirates if I become gov –Gida

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano state in this year’s general elections, Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf, popularly known as Abba Gida Gida, has vowed to scrap the four emirate councils – Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye recently created by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Yusuf, former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s son-in-law, on Friday said the creation of the four new emirates was “a plot by enemies of Kano state to squander the public treasury.”

Speaking at an iftar congregation with members of various associations in the transportation sector, Yusuf blamed Governor Ganduje for “championing misplaced priorities by creating the new emirates, sacking all permanent secretaries and casting aspersions on reputable Islamic scholars in the state.”

He said, “At a time when our major concerns in Kano are centered around upgrading critical infrastructure such as schools and hospitals to accelerate rapid development, the Kano state government is determined to creating additional liabilities that will consume millions of naira from the state’s scarce resources.

“We learnt that the Kano state government plans to spend hundreds of millions of Naira to build palaces and purchase royal cars to the newly crowned emirs at the expense of common citizens who barely can afford to pay school fees of their children. We want to tell the governor that these are misplaced priorities for a state with over three million out-of-school children, about four million unemployed youth and millions of almajiri roaming our streets without food and comfortable shelter.”

Yusuf said if he emerged victorious in his case before the Kano Governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly Petitions Tribunal, he “will definitely reverse the exercise by abolishing the new emirate councils.”
