I’ll improve women’s socio-economic wellbeing; Mama Market assures

Newly installed Mama Market General, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Madam Toyin Badmus, has promised to initiate and implement reforms that will improve the socio-economic fortunes of market women and men in the territory.

The mama market general, who made the pledge at Wuse Rock Park, Abuja at the weekend, said, “My vision for us all is that of unity, love and commitment to the cause and development of the market institution in the FCT to the level where we can contribute our quota to the growth and development of the FCT in particular and Nigeria in general.”

She said, as part of her plans for the market women and men, she would ensure there was a data base of all members which would be used to do a need assessment of all markets in FCT with a view to meeting their needs.

The market leader also promised to enroll members into a contributory pension scheme, improve security at the markets, exploit educational intervention programmes of the government for the benefit of members as well as start a health insurance policy for them.

She said, “As we know, our markets are like a mini Nigeria or mini Africa in terms of the population demography of the markets. This inevitably means that we have the capacity directly and indirectly to project Nigeria from our small space to the entire continent and the world at large.’’

She said the markets also reflect the social economic, cultural, traditional and historical sentiments of our people as an institution with a rich history behind it and one that has been able to stand the test of time across times season and eras.

She stated that, I have come to be bridge builder and vision driver in consonance with the existing market leadership in the FCT and the government to ensure that our potentials are harmonised for the benefit of our members, business partners and the general populace.
