The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia,Abia state, Dr Azubuike Onyebuchi has promised to transform the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia into to a teaching hospital during his tenure as the head of the medical facility.
He said he is poised to change the face of FMC Umuahia in line with current trends in the medical sector.
The Chief Medical Director disclosed this Saturday in Umuahia during the reception ceremony held in his honour by his kinsmen from Ikwuano/Umuahia otherwise called Izu Umunna Ikwuano Umuahia.
Dr Onyebuchi further said he was elated for the honour done him by his people following his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that he will not discriminate in his onerous assignment but to see all as one deserving the service of the health institution.
He promised not disappoint his people by ensuring that he uplift the health care services of FMC Umuahia to an enviable height so that President Buhari will be happy on his assignment.
“We will transform from federal hospital to a teaching hospital and I solicit the support of all to enable us change the face of FMC Umuahia,” Onyebuchi.
Earlier in his welcome address, Hon Chidi Nwosu, chairman organising committee of Izu Umunna of Ikwuano Umuahia said, “Izu Umunna Ikwuano Umuahia is a socio-cultural organisation whose prime objectives are for the unity and aspirations of Ikwuano/Umuahia people both at home and in the Diaspora who identify those unique cultural and traditional practices that are common and distinct amongst the clans with a view to exploring their potentials, sustain and improve on them as well as highlight them to wider societies”.
The former two time member of Abia state Assembly lamented the then Queen Elizabeth Hospital now FMC rendered health services to the people and her neighbours but regretted that since 1971 when Dr J C Ogbonnaya, an indigene held forte as the medical director of the place, it was in 2019 that President Buhari appointed another son of the soil, Dr Azubuike Onyebuchi as the Chief Medical Director.
The Izu Umunna Ikwuano Umuahia commended Buhari for the appointment, promising that their son will not disappoint him . They also extolled their sons as former Governor Chief T A Orji now Senator, Senator Chris Adighije and Prince B B Apugo for behind-the-scene roles played to see to its realisation.
Chairman of the occasion, Archbishop Chibuzor Raphael Opoko, the Archbishop of Methodist Church, Umuahia, noted that the appointment of his kinsman was a divine one, stressing that their son, Azubuike will do well because whoever that works in the vineyard of God will not be forsaken.
