I’ll transform Owerri municipal before, Ebere assures indigenes

The interim management committee (IMC) chairman of Owerri Municipal Council, Ebere Chukwuemeka, has assured the people of the council that he  will transform the area before he leaves office.

The chairman, who spoke to our correspondent in his office Tuesday, said “We have already re-roofed, re-painted the council buildings and completed the landscaping of the compound, with kerbs and flowers. We will embark on construction of 12 room toilets for the teeming population of the municipal staff behind the main building and car park to enable vehicles to park in organised form.

“We have restored light, bought a 500 KVA transformer stationed at Oha Owere hall and reactivated the borehole. And some weeks ago, we had to purchase  chairman’s official vehicle, a Hilux van, and about 20 Siena vehicles to tackle security in the municipal in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence and the army,” he said.

On the mini stadium project and Owerri township stadium, he said the council has recovered the premises from those who converted it to school premises (three primary schools are involved) with the directive of the former governor, Rochas Okorocha who destroyed it, adding that they had been given notice to relocate back to their former school compounds.

“We intend to construct Indoor Sports hall there, which would house tennis court, basketball pitch, handball pitch, and table tennis. We will also have tartan tracks for races and space for long jump etc.”

On the possibility of completing the projects before he leaves office, Ebere made it clear that “government is a continuum” but that he would do his best to ensure he finishes them in good time.
